The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. It was founded in 1861 and is widely regarded as one of the world’s top universities, particularly in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.
MIT is known for its highly selective admissions process, rigorous academic curriculum, and emphasis on hands-on learning and research. MIT enrolled 4,657 undergraduate students including 530 international applicants in the year 2022-23. The total student population including graduate students at MIT is 11,858. Admissions
Acceptance Rate:
MIT reinstated their SAT/ACT testing requirement for the class of 2027. 26,914 students applied to MIT including both early and regular action and MIT offered admission to 1,259 students. The university deferred 7,892 applicants, rejected 2,815 applicants and 532 withdrew before decisions were announced. When MIT was test-optional they got 33,796 applicants which is a lot more than this year.
GPA and Testing Requirements:
There is no minimum required GPA, but competitive applicants generally have a GPA of 3.5 or above, and mostly A’s in mathematics and science courses.
Types of Admissions:
MIT has 2 application cycles: Early Action(EA) and Regular Action(RA). All students whether domestic or international can apply EA. MIT’s Early Action isn’t single-choice or binding. You can apply to any other school that is not binding during the EA application cycle. Applicants can only apply once a year at MIT. If you are rejected from EA you are not eligible to apply for RA.
Additional Admissions Requirements:
MIT requires students to write short essays for 200 words each. There is also an additional information text box. You should choose your activities wisely because MIT only allows you to list only four activities on their application form.
MIT could also call you for an interview whenever possible with a member of the Educational Counselor (EC). The Educational Counselors would email you to fix up a time for the interview. Most Early Action interviews will take place in November and most Regular Action interviews will take place in January. Typically, interviews last an hour, though they can range from 30 minutes to two hours long.
Faculty-Student Ratio:
As of Fall 2021, the faculty-to-student ratio at MIT is approximately 3:1. This means that for every three students, there is one faculty member. However, it’s important to note that this ratio may vary across different departments and programs within the university. Additionally, this ratio does not take into account other academic staff and resources such as teaching assistants, research assistants, and administrative staff who also play an important role in supporting students’ academic experiences.
Four-Year Completion Rate:
When you are selecting a college you should focus on the retention and graduation rates of an institution. The first-year retention rate gives you the data on how many students come back to study for their second or sophomore year. The graduation rate, on the other hand, will give you data on how long it takes to complete a degree at MIT.

Academics
MIT has five schools and one college: the School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Engineering, the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, the Sloan School of Management, the School of Science, and the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.
MIT also offers several interdisciplinary programs that allow students to combine multiple fields of study, including computer science and engineering, economics and data science, and neuroscience.

The word hack at MIT usually refers to a clever, benign, and “ethical” prank or practical joke, which is both challenging for the perpetrators and amusing to the MIT community (and sometimes even the rest of the world!)”
One of my favorite hacks is the TWOSDAY HACK: On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022, i.e, Tuesday 02/22/2022 or 22/02/2022 in dd/mm/yyyy format (palindrome date!), MIT campus woke up to a few decorations eluding to the number 2. There was a giant 2 on top of the Small Dome.
