The University of Rochester is a prestigious private research university that upholds the ideals of equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. Located in New York, this university’s main campus, the River Campus, and the Medical Center are about two miles south of downtown Rochester. Offering over 200 academic programs, ranked #44 in National Universities by US News and #91 by Forbes, this university is taking strides towards emerging as a top-class university in the United States.

The research team of Ivy Central considers this university to be on par with the top names and encourages its students to consider this university for their undergraduate study.

About the University

The university has highly reputed faculty, artists, scholars, students, and alumni who are creating waves in their fields of study and working together with the world’s best minds to address some of the biggest challenges facing our civilization.

The university boasts Nobel Prize winners in Economics, Physics, Physiology, and Chemistry, among other areas of study, and an array of Pulitzer Prize winners in the domain of poetry, literature, music, drama, and history. This is in keeping with the university’s mission to “Learn, Discover, Heal, Create—and Make the World Ever Better.”

The university offers a campus environment where students are encouraged to come with an ‘open mind” to pursue their academics with a promise to be inspired, supported, and empowered. The students get a liberal arts education with research experience and advanced degrees in music, medicine, business, education, and more.

One of the biggest highlights of the university is that it does not have general education requirements and no traditional core curriculum. The only compulsory course is the Primary Writing Requirement, which aims to equip students with mastery of written communication.

There are two main parts to declaring your major:

  1. Choosing your major: While some students enter college with clarity regarding their careers, many don’t know what they would like to major in, and quite a few students change their minds after their freshman year. The university helps students in the decision-making process by understanding their interests and gathering information—there are several resources designed to assist them in thinking through their “major” decisions.

  2. OFFICIALLY DECLARING the major: This is when students apply for acceptance into the major they have chosen and gain official approval from the required department. The majors fall into three main categories:

  • Humanities,

  • Social Sciences

  • Natural Sciences and Engineering

Minors

Undergraduates can choose to complete a minor in addition to a major. Students in the college can declare one or more minors in conjunction with either a single or double major.

One of the most distinguishing factors of the university is its “Clusters,” which are three thematically related courses, and students can choose from hundreds of clusters to create their own.

Declaring a Cluster

A “cluster” in this context refers to significant work in one of the divisions and may take the form of an approved cluster, a minor, or another major.

The Rochester Curriculum encourages students to pursue “substantive and integrated study” in each of the college’s three divisions of learning: humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and engineering.

To earn a degree, students are required to complete at least one major in one of the three divisions of learning and one cluster in each of the other two divisions, with an average grade of C or better. (Students who complete one of the professionally accredited engineering concentrations (BME, CHE, ECE, ME) need to complete a cluster in only one of the other two divisions.)

This flexibility allows students to take courses in a variety of different areas, which they may particularly have thought of. For instance, a student interested in technology and psychology might major in computer science while completing clusters in psychology and digital studies, gaining a diverse and interdisciplinary education.

The university is designed to enable students to take some classes just for fun and also to pursue any passion they may have, which expands beyond the classroom. This enables students to build a customized schedule around their strengths and interests. Acceptance rate of U Chicago decreases.

The Schools

  1. School of Arts & Sciences: This is the largest school at the university, offering numerous programs and departments spanning social sciences, natural sciences, and arts and humanities.

  2. Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences The Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences is one of the nation’s top engineering schools housed in a leading research university.
