The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) is a gateway to the world of biomedical research. SIMR has continued to be a beacon of innovation and inclusion in the landscape of STEM education since 2000. With the addition of the bioengineering boot camp in 2014, SIMR continues to expand its horizons, offering even more avenues for exploration and discovery.
SIMR is a transformative 8-week summer internship program for high school juniors and seniors who are passionate about biomedical research. The internship offers hands-on experiences that foster active engagement with the scientific process and nurture a strong science identity. SIMR’s mission is to enrich and expand the US STEM workforce by providing unparalleled research opportunities and supplemental essays to students who can uniquely contribute to the field.
Students embark on an immersive journey into the realms of cutting-edge research under the guidance of a one-on-one mentor at the labs within Stanford University’s Institutes of Medicine. The students can choose from eight research institutes, each focusing on specific areas like cancer biology, stem cell research, or cardiovascular medicine. The mentors will guide them through the research project, ensuring a personalized and enriching experience. Participants get the opportunity to explore their passions and dive deep into their chosen fields.
But SIMR isn’t just about lab work; it’s about empowering students from all walks of life to pursue their dreams. With stipends provided to all participants, and additional funding available for those from underrepresented groups in biomedical research, SIMR ensures that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of academic excellence.
SIMR is a highly competitive program. High school juniors and seniors with a passion for research and a thirst for knowledge are encouraged to apply. The program selects approximately 50 students each year to participate in the program.
SIMR goes beyond the lab bench. You’ll be part of a vibrant community of like-minded peers, participate in engaging workshops and discussions, and forge connections that will last a lifetime.
